Response to Fair Trade USA leaving FLO

Hi all,

         I recently received an email from a professor at USask (Lori Hanson) with a response by the United Students for Fair Trade to Fair Trade USA's decision to leave FLO. I found it interesting and I thought some other EWBers would as well. Here it is:

> As an independent and integral voice in the Fair Trade movement,
> United Students for Fair Trade has held many meetings to conclude on
> where we stand on Transfair/Fair Trade USA’s recent decision to leave

>               We are deeply concerned by FT USA’s move to leave FLO
> and many other decisions made preceding it. We have analyzed the
> potential consequences of the new changes and have decided that the
> moves FT USA is making will be detrimental to the progress the
> movement has achieved for producers and artisans all over the world.
> These lowered standards undermine the Fair Trade values producers,
> activists, and consumers have advocated for since the inception of the
> Fair Trade movement in the late nineties. Since this time, public
> outcry from community stakeholders to uphold the integrity of the

If your interested in the details of the current debate, i would follow the group "fair trade people" on linkedin. This is where FLO represenatives, a lot of business owners, and FT USA are having an online debate.

A lot of the new standards FT USA wants to use have not been released, and they have just released the proposed "Hired Labour" standards for Cocoa, coffee, and sugar, and they want feedback.

Also because of a lot of feedback, they just announced on Friday that they are doing a complete review of the standards for multi-ingredient products and hope to have this updated by Dec 1st.

It will be interesting to see how they respond to given critisims, but it looks like the next few months will have a lot of debates happening, with both sides using rather strong language. Lets hope the debate stays healthy and generates more learning and new ideas in the Fair Trade movement, and does not focus on jumping to unproven or unsubstantiated conclusions about what "might" happen before standards are set and ideas are tested.

It's awesome how many different Fair Trade articles are here now and I have another one. written by Chris Bacon, short bio below.

'Christopher M. Bacon is an environmental social scientist and agroecologist. After completing an interdisciplinary degree in Environmental Studies, he has taught in the Latin American and Latinos Studies and Sociology Departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz. As of September 1st 2008, he will be a S.V. Ciriacy-Wantrup fellow affiliated with the Geography Department at UC Berkeley. He is an author and co-editor of Confronting the Coffee Crisis: Fair Trade, Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mexico and Central America (MIT Press). His work focuses on trade, globalizations and sustainable community development in the Americas.'
